Born Helen Folasade Adu on 16 January 1959 in Ibadan, Oyo State, to an English mother and Yoruba Nigerian father. Sade Adu returned to England with her mother aged four. Sade started her music career while in college. It was in 1982 that she started singing and later formed the Sade band, going on to sell 50m albums. She attended London’s Saint Martin’s School of Art. She went solo in 1983 signing with Epic Records.
Sade is lead singer in the band of the same name. They band have had a quiet year after releasing Soldier of Love, their sixth album, in 2011, followed by a world tour that earned $83 million at the box office. She lives in the Cotswolds and her two companies, Angel Music and Angelprop, made about £900,000 profit between them in 2011.
Sade was married to Spanish film director Carlos Pliego in 1989 and divorced in 1995. She has a daughter, Ila Adu with Jamaican music producer Bob Morgan.
