American businessman and co-founder of Nike, Inc. Philip Hampson “Phil” Knight has an estimated net worth of $26.2 billion as of 2017, according to Forbes. This increased to $32.9 billion as of October 2018.
Phil Knight was born on February 24 1938 in Portland, Oregon. He is the son of lawyer turned newspaper publisher William W. Knight and Lota (Hatfield) Knight. He studied at the Cleveland High School in Portland and continued his education at the University of Oregon. He earned a journalism degree in 1959.
After graduating from Oregon, he enlisted in the Army and served one year on active duty and seven years in the Army Reserve. After graduating from Stanford business school in 1962, he traveled the world and talked his way into meetings with Japanese shoe suppliers. Later he and his old track coach each invested $500 to start Blue Ribbon Sports. Knight changed the name to Nike in 1978. Currently he is the chairman of Nike.
Knight married Penelope “Penny” Parks in 1968. They have three children. Knight has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to the University of Oregon and Stanford Graduate School of Business.
