Born on 17 September 1950 to a family of grocers in Vadnagar, he helped his father sell tea at the Vadnagar railway station. He later ran a tea stall with his brother near a bus terminus.

Modi completed schooling in Vadnagar. He was an average student, but a keen debater. He came into contact with the RSS and began attending its local shakhas when he was eight years old. That is where he met his political mentor Lakshmanrao Inamdar.

Modi served as the leader of Sangh’s student wing, ABVP, in Gujarat. He was selected national secretary of BJP in 1995; and promoted to the post of general secretary in 1998. He was seen as a master strategist who knew the way out of every crisis. He played a significant role in BJP’s 1998 victory.

Modi assumed the office of the Chief Minister of Gujarat on October 3 2001. As a chief minister his ideas of governance revolved around privatization and small government.

After being elected as prime minister, he resigned from the post of chief minister on 21 May 2014. As the chairman of the BJP’s Central Election Campaign Committee, he played a major role in the party’s victory in the 2014 general elections.
