Tanzanian businessman, entrepreneur, former politician and philanthropist Mohammed Dewji, also known as Mo, has an estimated net worth of $1.25 billion as of 2015, according to Forbes.
Mohammed was born on 8 May 1975 in Ipembe, Singida. He studied at the Arusha Primary School and the International School of Tanganyika. He earned his diploma from Saddlebrook High School. In the year 1998 he graduated from Georgetown University with a bachelor’s degree in international business finance.
Dewji returned home after graduation and assumed the management of Mohamed Enterprise Tanzania Limited (MET Limited), a commodities trading company founded by his father.
He acquired many loss-making companies in the early 2000s when the Government of Tanzania privatized them and turned them into profit centers by trimming personnel expenses. Today his MeTL Group of Companies is the largest privately-owned conglomerate in Tanzania, with interests in manufacturing, textiles, distribution, agriculture and real estate. Dewji owns around 75 percent of the group. In 2014, he launched Mo Cola, to compete with Coke.
Mohammed Dewji served his country as a member of its parliament for ten years from 2005. He represented Singida Urban constituency. He is married and has three children. Currently he lives in Dar es Salaam.
