South African media tycoon and entrepreneur Jacobus Petrus “Koos” Bekker has an estimated net worth of $2.1 billion as of 2015, according to Forbes. Bekker is the chairman of Naspers.
Koos Bekker was born on 14 December 1952 in South Africa. He attended the Hoër Volkskool Heidelberg. He earned his degrees from Stellenbosch University (law and literature) and Wits University (law). After working for few years, he gained MBA from Columbia Business School in 1984.
For their project paper, Koos Bekker and some of his young colleagues founded one of the first two pay television services outside the US. M-Net and its sister companies have expanded to 48 nations across Africa.
Koos Bekker was appointed the CEO of Naspers in 1997. During his tenure, the market capitalization of Naspers grew from $1.2 billion to $45 billion. Under his able leadership, the company invested in countries like India, China and Russia. He stepped down as CEO of the company in February 2014. He is the chairman of the company. Currently this broad-based multinational internet and media group offers services in more than 130 countries. Bekker is one of the founding directors of MTN, a multinational mobile communications company.
