With a net worth of $40 million, John Legend released his self titled demo in 2000. A year later he released the independent album Live at Jimmy’s Uptown. He sold the album at his own shows and continued to work on demos. After being introduced to Kanye West in 2001, Legend signed with his label and sang in West’s songs.

Album Debut 

John Legend released his debut album in 2004; the first week of sales reached 116,000 copies. The album went on to make it to Billboard’s seventh best selling album at the time. Throughout the U.S. the album sold 540,300 copies. Throughout the rest of the world the album sold 850,000 copies. In addition to the U.S. charts it did well on the Norwegian charts.


Legend’s first album was such a success that he won a Grammy in 2006 for Best R&B Album. Four of the singles from the album made it to the top 30 on the U.K. and New Zealand charts. His Ordinary People single ranked 24 on the Billboard 100.

Additional Albums

The release of Legend’s second album was in October of 2006. He collaborated with several other musicians on the album. It became the third ranked on the Billboard 200. The album went gold in the U.K., Italy and the Netherlands. One single on the album, Heaven, won the 2007 Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. Released in October of 2008, Legend’s third album included a single he collaborated on with OutKast and Andre 3000. It did extremely well on the charts and was recognized with a Grammy for Best Collaboration.

In 2009, Legend worked with The Roots on an album which was released in 2010. The next year Legend went on to win Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Album. Both also won Outstanding Album and Outstanding Group at the NAACP Image Awards.
