Hungarian-born George Soros is an American businessman, author, investor and philanthropist. According to Forbes magazine, Soros has an estimated net worth of $25.2 billion as of 2017. This declined to $8.3 billion as of October 2018. He is the founder of Soros Fund Management LLC.
Soros was born on 12 August 1930 in Budapest, Hungary, to a nonobservant Jewish family. He was 13 years old when Nazi Germany occupied Hungary in 1944. In those days, Jewish children were barred from attending school by the Nazis.
Soros emigrated to England in 1947 and studied at the London School of Economics. He worked as a railway porter and as a waiter. He earned a bachelor of science in philosophy in 1951 and a PhD in philosophy in 1954, both from the London School of Economics.
After graduation he worked as a traveling salesman for a fancy goods wholesaler. He started his financial career at the merchant bank Singer & Friedlander, London. He moved to New York City in 1956, where he worked as an arbitrage trader for F.M. Mayer. Currently he is the chairman of Soros Fund Management LLC, a company which he founded in 1970.
Soros has been an active philanthropist since the 1970s. His philanthropic funding includes efforts to promote non-violent democratization in the post-Soviet states. He has been married thrice and divorced twice. He has five children.
