During that time he also served as Majority Leader of the California Assembly from 1996 to 1998 and later as the 63rd Speaker of the California Assembly from 1998 to 2000. Villaraigosa was then a Member of the Los Angeles City Council for the 14th district from 2003 to 2005. He is the national co-chairman of Hilary Clinton’s presidential campaign in addition to his role as a member of President Barack Obama’s Transition Economic Advisory Board. He was the Chairman of the 2012 Democratic National Convention and worked as the 41st Mayor of Los Angeles, California from 2005 to 2013. During his time as Mayor he appeared in Time magazine as one of the 25 most influential Latinos. He was the third Mexican American to occupy the role as the Mayor of Los Angeles.
