Chinese businessman and philanthropist Wang Jianlin is the chairman of China’s largest real estate developer Dalian Wanda Group. Forbes estimates this self-made billionaire’s net worth to be around $22.8 billion as of October 2018, making him the 4th richest person in China.
Wang was born on October 24 1954 in Cangxi County, Sichuan Province, China, just after the Communist revolution. His father fought for Mao Zedong’s Red Army during the Long March. Wang joined the People’s Liberation Army when he was 15 years and was part of the PLA for 16 years. He studied at the Liaoning University.
Wang took a city government job in Dalian in 1986. He became the chairman of Wanda, which was run by the government, in 1989, when he was 35 years old. Today’s Wang’s Dalian Wanda Group is a commercial real estate powerhouse. It controls around 200 departmental stores, shopping plazas and luxury hotels. In August 2014 he formed a joint venture with Baidu and Tencent to set up an ecommerce company known as Wanda E-Commerce. In December 2014 he listed Wanda Commercial Properties in Hong Kong. He is a delegate to the Chinese National People’s Congress.
Wang is married to Lin Ning. The couple has one son Wang Sicong.
