During Bill Clinton’s term as the President of the United States Blumenthal was his aide. He was known for his criticism of President George W. Bush’s administration. Blumenthal has also authored the books How Bush Rules: Chronicles of a Radical Regime, Permanent Campaign, The Clinton Wars, The Last Campaign of the Cold War, and The Rise of the Counter-Establishment. He also worked as associate producer for the 2002 film Max and executive producer for the 2007 documentary Taxi to the Dark Side.
