Tanzanian politician, business tycoon and entrepreneur Rostam Aziz has an estimated net worth of $1 billion as of 2015, according to Forbes. He is he the richest and the first person in Tanzania to become a billionaire.
Rostam was born in the year 1964. The Azizis are a fifth generation Tanzanian family of Iranian ancestry. Today it is one of the richest families in East Africa.
Rostam Aziz started working in his family’s trading business, but later started on his own by cutting deals with international companies seeking partners in Tanzania. Today he owns around 18 percent of Vodacom Tanzania through Cavalry Holdings, an investment company registered in Jersey.
Aziz is the owner of Caspian Mining, the largest contract mining firm in Tanzania. The company performs works for big names in the mining industry like Barrick Gold and BHP Billiton.
Rostam Aziz was a member of the Tanzanian parliament between 1993 and 2011; he represented Igunga, which is one of the six districts of the Tabora Region of Tanzania. During his tenure every household of Igunga was provided with health insurance from the Community Health Fund.
Rostam Aziz is married and lives in Dar es Salaam. Aziz owns residential and commercial real estate in Oman and Dubai.
