Egyptian businessman and the patriarchal head of the Sawiris Family, Onsi Sawiris has an estimated net worth of $1.46 billion as of 2015, according to Forbes. He is the founder of Orascom Construction Industries.
When he started working, he was disenchanted with the socialist government of Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser. He was prevented from leaving Egypt for six years in the 1960s. He spent some time in Libya and returned to Egypt during the business friendly regime of President Anwar Sadat.
Sawiris and his three sons resumed their business activities in Egypt. Over the past few decades, the family has contributed immensely to Egypt. Onsi Sawiris founded Orascom Group.
The Orascom Group’s construction, telecommunications, tourism, science and technology companies are run by his sons. Onsi Sawiris himself is involved in telecommunications, tourism development, construction and other fields.
Currently Onsi Sawiris’ son Nassef Sawiris heads the Orascom Construction Industries. Following the political uprisings in Egypt in the year 2011, Nassef Sawiris moved the company’s listing to Euronext in Amsterdam. Onsi Sawiris owns around 25 percent of the company.
