Narendra Modi is an inspiring leader and the 15th and current Prime Minister of India. He assumed the office in May 2014. A leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he served as the Chief Minister of the State of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014.
While contesting from Vadodra Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat, he had declared his total assets at 15,100,000 INR (approximately equal to $246,000) in 2014. He had declared that he does not own any vehicle.
As per his affidavit filed along with the nomination papers, he declared his movable assets at $84,075, which included cash in banks and fixed deposits. Cash in hand was $484 and four rings were valued at $2,200.
Narendra Modi has not bought any jewelry in the last two years. As per the 2014 declaration, he added more than $29,340 in his financial investments (like cash in bank, fixed deposits and saving schemes) in the last two years.
Narendra Modi’s income as per the IT returns he had filed for financial year 2012-13 was $7402.30. His total assets in 2012 stood at $216,806.
Born on 17 September 1950 to a family of grocers in Vadnagar, he helped his father sell tea at the Vadnagar railway station. He later ran a tea stall with his brother near a bus terminus.
Modi completed schooling in Vadnagar. He was an average student, but a keen debater. He came into contact with the RSS and began attending its local shakhas when he was eight years old. That is where he met his political mentor Lakshmanrao Inamdar.
Modi served as the leader of Sangh’s student wing, ABVP, in Gujarat. He was selected national secretary of BJP in 1995; and promoted to the post of general secretary in 1998. He was seen as a master strategist who knew the way out of every crisis. He played a significant role in BJP’s 1998 victory.
Modi assumed the office of the Chief Minister of Gujarat on October 3 2001. As a chief minister his ideas of governance revolved around privatization and small government.
After being elected as prime minister, he resigned from the post of chief minister on 21 May 2014. As the chairman of the BJP’s Central Election Campaign Committee, he played a major role in the party’s victory in the 2014 general elections.
After the party’s victory, Modi was sworn in as the prime minister on 26 May 2014. He is India’s first prime minister born after the country’s independence.
