According to Forbes, Italian businessman Leonardo Del Vecchio has an estimates net worth of $24 billion as of 2015. This declined to about $21.9 billion as of October 2018. He is the richest man in Italy. Leonardo Del Vecchio is the founder and chairman of Italian eyewear company Luxottica Group S.p.A.
Leonardo Del Vecchio was born on 22 May 1935 in Milan, Italy, as a child of a poor family. His father died five months prior to his birth. His mother handed him over to an orphanage as she was unable to support him financially.
Leonardo started his career as an apprentice to a tool and die maker in Milan, but he decided to use his skills to make spectacle parts. He moved to Agordo, the home to Italian eyewear industry, in 1961.
He founded Luxottica in the same year. He began selling eyeglass frames under Luxottica brand in 1967. Today $8.4 billion company Luxottica is the largest eyewear company in the world. It controls more than 80 percent of the world’s major brands. Its well-known brands are Ray-Ban, Oakley and Persol.
Leonardo owns stakes in Italian insurance behemoth Assicurazioni Generali, Italian bank UniCredit and French real estate company Foncière des Régions. He is married and has six children. His son Claudio owns US men’s retailer Brooks Brothers.
