South African businessman, investor and banker Lauritz “Laurie” Dippenaar has an estimated net worth of $730 million as of 2015, according to Forbes. Dippenaar is the chairman of FirstRand Financial Group.
Laurie was born on 25 October 1948. He graduated from Pretoria University with a Master of Commerce degree. He qualified as a chartered accountant with KPMG, and was with the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa for three years.
Dippenaar co-founded Rand Consolidated (FirstRand’s predecessor) in 1977, investing with GT Ferreira and Paul Harris. FirstRand was formed in 1998. He was the first CEO of FirstRand, a position which he held till 2005. Currently he is the non-executive chairman of the company, which is active in banking and insurance. FirstRand’s RMB Holdings spun off insurance division RMI in 2010.
Lauritz Dippenaar sponsors the Dippenaar Postgraduate Scholarship for International Study. It is available for citizens of South Africa. They can study outside South Africa in any discipline at any internationally recognized university of their choice for a postgraduate degree.
Dippenaar is married and has three children. He lives in Johannesburg, South Africa. He likes canoeing, cycling and watching rugby.
