Born in Lower East Side, Manhattan, New York on August 17, 1944. He began his career as a programmer at Ampex Corporation where he created databases for the CIA in the 1970s. In 1977, he co-founded Software Development Laboratories (SDL) which eventually transitioned to Oracle Systems Corporation following its flagship product the Oracle Database. In 1997, Ellison was appointed as a director of Apple Computer but resigned five years later to focus solely on Oracle whose revenues in 2014 grew to $38.3 billion.
