Messina is widely recognized for being half of the soft rock duo Loggins and Messina with Kenny Loggins, and initially gained fame from being a founding member of the country rock band Poco and part of the folk rock band Buffalo Springfield. He started playing the guitar at the age of five and at 18 he recorded an album with a band named Jim Messina and His Jesters. He played bass for two songs on Buffalo Springfield’s latest album and also worked as a producer and recording engineer for the band. Messina was instrumental in forming Poco in 1968 and played lead guitar and provided vocals along with songwriting for the band. He quitted Poco following the recording of two studio albums and a live album and signed on with Columbia Records. He met Kenny Loggins and the duo ended up selling more than 16 million records. They were originally a duo from 1971 to 1976 and then reformed ten years ago. Their biggest hits include “Danny’s Song”, “Your Mama Don’t Dance”, and “House at Pooh Corner”. The duo launched six studio albums in total, with 1973’s Full Sail and 1974’s Mother Lode peaking inside the Top 10 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.
