Nicknamed “The Admiral” for the time he spent in the US Navy, David Robinson is one of the most successful NBA players in basketball history. Growing up David never showed a real interest in basketball. In fact he didn’t truly start playing until his senior year of high school. It wasn’t until his final two years of University that his talent was really noticed.
Upon graduation, he became eligible for the 1987 NBA draft and was selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the first overall pick. However, the Spurs had to wait two years because he had to fulfill his active-duty obligation with the Navy.
Robinson’s NBA career finally started in 1989 playing for the Spurs. In his rookie season he led them to the greatest single season turnaround in NBA history at the time.
The Admiral went on to win the MVP trophy in 1995, and in 1996 he was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. In 1999 he finally won a NBA championship and again in 2003.
David Robinson is also known for the amount of success he has had after retirement. After his retirement in 2003 he launched two private equity funds. Admiral Capital, the first fund was started in 2007 and raised $115 million. That fund eventually went on to acquire $350 million worth of real estate assets. He launched his second fund in 2015, with the goal of raising $175 million to again invest in real estate.
Along with all his success David also chooses to donate 10% of his trust’s earnings to charity with a focus on helping inner-city kids.
