German-born American businesswoman and philanthropist Christel DeHaan has an estimated net worth of $900 million as of 2015, according to Forbes. She is the co-founder of timeshare pioneer Resort Condominiums International, which was established in 1974, along with her husband, Jon DeHaan. In 1979 Christel took over management following Jon’s heart attack. When they got divorced in 1987, she was awarded half of the company by the court, and she acquired the remainder for $67.5 million. Under her management, Resort Condominiums International was turned into a global enterprise with 4,200 employees and $479 million in sales. However, Christel sold the company to a division of HFS Inc. in 1996 for a deal worth $825 million and since then, she has switched her focus on philanthropy with over $168 million donated to charity cause to date. In 1998, she established Christel House International, which tries to eliminate poverty by combining K-12 education with health, character development and career programs, serving over 4,000 students from India, Mexico, the U.S. and South Africa. Meanwhile, Christel has also donated millions of money to a family foundation that backs arts and cultural organizations in Indiana. She was ranked #19 on Forbes’ 2015 America’s Self-Made Women.
