Charlotte Townshend has an estimated net worth of $660 million (£410m) as of 2015, according to the Sunday Times Rich List. Townshend is one of only two people in Britain entitled to own swans, the other being the Queen. She runs Abbotsbury Swannery, near Weymouth. A racehorse owner, she regularly rides out to see the swans at dawn, and when her only son, Simon, was born she followed an ancient tradition and laid the infant down in a swan’s nest. Townshend, a keen huntswoman, is the only surviving daughter of the 9th Viscount Galway.
She inherited her fortune from her father, who died in 1971, and her mother, Lady Teresa, daughter of the 7th Earl of Ilchester, who passed away in 1990. Her estates include 15,000 acres surrounding her Dorset home, Melbury, and more than 20 acres in Holland Park, west London, which houses a mansion bought by Robbie Williams. Townshend has nine farming and estate companies, which held £73.5m assets in 2012-13.
