Kenyan businessman, entrepreneur and industrialist Bhimji Depar Shah has an estimated net worth of $700 million as of 2015, according to Forbes. He is the founder and chairman of Bidco Group of Companies.
This self-made millionaire was born in 1932 in India. He migrated to Kenya in the 1960s and settled in Nyeri, a town located in the Central Highlands of Kenya. He opened a petrol station in the town.
Shah founded garments manufacturing company Bidco Industries Limited in 1970. The company switched to soap production in 1985. Bidco opened an edible oil manufacturing plant in Thika in 1991 and moved its international headquarters into the town.
Today the family-owned manufacturing conglomerate Bidco is a market leader in Kenya, the largest economy in the East African Community. It has operations in 13 African nations. It is a leading manufacturer of soaps, detergents and baking powder in the region. Bidco’s annual gross revenue is more than $500 million. It is also one of the largest manufacturers of edible oils in Tanzania.
Bhimji Depar Shah is married. His son Vimal Shah is currently the CEO of Bidco Africa. Vimal Shah has also been the chair of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance since 2013. Bhimji resides in Nairobi, Kenya.
