Born Alisher Burkhanovich Usmanov on 9 September 1953 in Chust, Namangan Province, Uzbek SSR, Soviet Union. He earned his degree in international law in 1976 from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations.
Usmanov is the founder and majority shareholder of Metalloinvest, a Russian industrial conglomerate based in Moscow. He is the owner of Kommersant Publishing House; and the co-owner of Mail.ru and MegaFon. Mail.ru is the largest internet company in the Russian speaking world and MegaFon is the second largest mobile operator in Russia. He has interests in many of Russia’s key sectors. He has also invested in Alibaba and Xiaomi.
Usmanov is a member of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. In 2013, he was honored with the Order for Service to the Fatherland IV. He is a trustee for many social, educational and cultural organizations.
